This was a collaboration with Kendra Frost on the writing front. She was visiting me in LA (in 2018), killing time until her band Kite Base were to hit the road with NIN. She had brought her Tempest drum machine with her, and we decided we wanted to cover “I’m Looking Through You” by the Beatles - it wound up morphing into something else entirely! Lyrically, I was referencing a few things - the verses are about a nervous breakdown I had in 2013 where I suffered from severe panic attacks that confined me to bed for a month. Luckily I recovered relatively quickly, but at the time it was utter terror.
And the choruses, “You’re nothing more than meat/ just throw him to the beasts” - were brewed from disdain and despair from the Trump administration & how that pushed so much poison & pain into the world, I just kept visualizing Trump with his greasy, disgusting mouth & teeth, horrible, oily dripping words oozing out. So there became catharsis, wanting to throw shitty people and mental illness to the beasts.
