Written somewhere around mid-2018, it started out much much slower, and was all 808 & Minimoog Model D synth. It was written at a feverish time in America, and at this point, I was on a daily basis stunned & sickened by what right wing America was getting away with. Each day was outdone by another horrible thing, building up more & more, rising up.
I never considered myself intelligent, secure or articulate enough to debate politics, but the Trump administration brought outrage and sadness out of so many, and I personally had to exorcise it or go mad. I reworked the song to radically increase the tempo & add a scuzzed up-fuzzed up bass guitar (something I’d never used on one of my records before), and more fitful vocals - in fact the very last screaming phrase ( “rats rise up never let ‘em kill again”) blew my voice out for a few days - got a bit carried away..
I saw this horrible culture of privileged cartoon rats eating those that were not of their ilk or privilege, the “mice” - and eventually eating themselves after consuming everyone & everything else. A gross, bone-chilling cannibalistic blur of hysteria.
Musically, I was getting into Ghost Rider by Suicide, and always wanted to have something that pulsed like that. Dean reworked the ending drums, massively improving the ending, making it a lot more propulsive.
